A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
