Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
